SWAYAM (Study Webs of Active-Learning for Young Aspiring Minds) is a program initiated by Government of India and designed to achieve the three cardinal principles of Education Policy viz., access, equity and quality. NPTEL has been offering self-study courses across engineering, humanities and science streams for more than a decade. These are available at: http://nptel.ac.in. From March 2014 NPTEL has been offering online certification for its courses, the highlight being the certification exam through which the student gets an opportunity to earn a certificate from the IIT’s. These are available at: https://onlinecourses.nptel.ac.in.
Objectives
- Participant can learn the subject from the expert faculties of IITs/IISc.
- Provide self learning platform for the students of Department of Computer Science and Engineering. (Inculcate mode of self-learning).
- Develop problem solving skills among the students of Computer Science and Engineering.
- Facilitate a platform for advanced learning of the existing courses in the curriculum.
- Build lifelong learning skills for the students and staff.
- To expose our students to the content developed by premier institutes of the nation. (Across India and professionals from the industry which will enrich the learning experience.)
- To enable students towards ICT based learning.
- To promote certification facilities in the campus.
- Promote best teaching learning resources to all.
- Aimed to prepare the students for GATE preparations as well as Learning New Technologies.
- Enrolled participants receiving quality instruction and education in select topics and skills can improve their employability and widen their knowledge base, get introduced to new domains
- Evaluate them-selves on how they compare against the pool of students nationwide
- After successful completion of the course each participants and mentor are eligible for industry recognized certificate.
- These courses and certificates can be quoted while applying to internships at companies
- In most of the courses, there is a list of industries that will consider this course certificate. NPTEL also shares the toppers’ list to those industries for recruitment purpose
Dhanekula Institute of Engineering and Technology, being a ‘Local Chapter of NPTEL’ appeals students to take the benefits of this initiative and enjoy the E-Learning, where they can study as per their mood and play/pause/forward/backward/stop teacher as per grasping limit.
Process
To encourage more students to participate in this initiative, we are setting up SWAYAM-NPTEL chapter in the department which will be under the headship of a faculty member of the college; we will keep the SPOC updated about all the latest NPTEL initiatives and give him information which he can disseminate among the students. All the faculty members and students are encouraged to enroll in the certification process.
SPOC can identify suitable mentors for various courses, who can ensure that students are active in a course, are submitting their assignments on time and also clarify the doubts they may have.
- Duration of the courses is 4, 8 or 12 weeks.
- Each week, you need to watch 6 video lectures (of length 20 to 30 minutes) and attempt one online quiz at your convenient time.
- It is totally free to enroll, watch video lectures and attempt online quizzes.
- A scholarship (Exam fees reimbursement) is provided to the participants from a Local Chapter, as per the availability of funds
- It has been observed that it is difficult to complete a course alone. So, motivate your friends to enroll and take a common course in a group of 4-5 students.
Impact of Facilitating Self Learning (upto Dec-2019)
